Museum of Discovery and Science

Your kids will love Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Discovery and Science. You’re bound to find a learning adventure for the whole family. The museum is home to over 200 exhibits including the largest living coral reef in captivity, bats, snakes, the Runways to Rockets aerospace exhibit and an IMAX theater.

Butterfly World offers visitors a fun, educational opportunity to get an up-close look at this 10-acre butterfly farm and research facility. In addition to being the birthplace of over a million butterflies, Butterfly World features the largest free-flight hummingbird aviary in the United States.

This park, whose lands were donated to the state by Hugh Taylor Birch, is located between the Intracoastal Waterway and the beautiful, blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.  You can rent a canoe, fish from the seawall, or access the beach via the pedestrian tunnel.  It is a perfect place to spend the day picnicing or on nature walks.  “The canoe ride along the fresh water lagoon is AMAZING!”

Fruit and Spice Park

The Park’s tropical climate can be found nowhere else in the continental U.S. and hosts over 500 varieties of fruits, vegetables, spices, herbs, and nuts, and other commercially important plant specimens from around the world.  The Park showcases 150 varieties of mango, 75 varieties of bananas, 70 bamboo varieties, and numerous other exotic edibles. With 1.5 million acres of swamps, saw-grass prairies and sub-tropical jungles, Everglades National Park is one of the most unusual public parks in the United States. Located on the southern tip of Florida, the park is home to 14 rare and endangered species, including the American Crocodile, the Florida Panther and the West Indian Manatee. A large portion of the park is primitive, explored only by adventurists and researchers – but visitors have ample opportunity to walk, camp and canoe. Coral Castle is truly a monument to the uniqueness of Miami! This attraction was built by a Latvian-born Miami resident named Ed Leedskalnin as a monument to his lover. After 28 years of effort, he introduced his 1100-ton coral creation to the world. It’s a bit of a trip from downtown, but well worth the time.
